Annual Conferences

The Society holds an Annual Conference, which is usually combined with its Annual General Meeting.

The aims of the LepSoc Africa Conference are twofold: firstly, it showcases recent developments, scientific papers or events, relevant to Afrotropical Lepidoptera. Secondly, it presents an opportunity for members of LepSoc Africa (including overseas members and visiting lepidopterists) to meet socially and share ideas and experiences.

A summary of Annual Conferences held over the previous 7 years is as follows:

  • 2019 Knysna, Western Cape
  • 2018 Hermannsburg School, Greytown, KwaZulu Natal
  • 2016 & 2017 Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, Roodepoort, Gauteng
  • 2015 Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, Brummeria, Gauteng
  • 2014 Blue Moonlight Lodge, Cullinan, Gauteng
  • 2013 Hermannsburg School, Greytown, KwaZulu Natal
  • 2012 Onderstepoort Research Centre, Pretoria, Gauteng

Annual Conference and AGM

This year’s LepSoc Africa Conference and AGM will be held at Knysna in the Western Cape on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th November 2019 (two full days) – see programme on page 2.

The event is being held during the height of the butterfly season in this area, to enable visiting lepidopterists to attend the Conference and partake in local field trips or excursions. It is also during the peak flying season of the Brenton Blue Orachrysops niobe, and will provide an opportunity for focused searches to be made for other colonies of this Critically Endangered butterfly. A reward is being offered for the person(s) who discover such a colony (see attached).

The venue is the Knysna Hollow Hotel and Conference Centre on Welbedacht Road, Knysna. Details of the venue can be explored at The conference facilities are top notch and the hotel has ample accommodation. For those that prefer other accommodation options Knysna has a range of establishments to suit every lifestyle taste or budget – see

George Airport is only 65 km from Knysna and the journey takes less than an hour. Several airlines such as SAA, Kulula, Safair and Mango provide services from other major cities.

Field trip – Kammanassie Nature Reserve

This trip will be arranged for Thursday 14th and Friday 15th November (with overnight camping on the mountain) if there is sufficient demand. More details will follow.

Call for papers
