This book is a major step in African butterfly conservation, and the daunting agenda set by SABCA for its compilation was both demanding andcomprehensive, but has produced an authoritative foundation work. Its completion is a sign of the considerable strength and resolve of the regional lepidopterist community. SANBI deserve considerable praise for supporting this project, as do all members of the steering group and the numerous contributors, with major impetus and participation from within the Lepidopterists’ Society of Africa, as well as the Animal Demography Unit of the University of Cape Town. The collective expertise of all participants is embedded in the final product, thus assuring its credibility as an authoritative contemporary statement of lasting significance.
